Audrey C. Hoffmann (nee Kohlmeier), 100, of Waterloo, died July 13, 2019, in Red Bud. She was born March 30, 1919, in Waterloo, daughter of the late Theodore and Sophia (nee Hohnbaum) Kohlmeier.

She is a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Wartburg.

She is survived by her children Judy (Les) Niemann, Donna (Dan) DeWilde and David Hoffmann; grandchildren Jeff (Shannon) Stiening, Kim (Ken) Meyer, Travis Stiening, Douglas (Jessica) DeWilde, Derrick (Jennifer) DeWilde and Devon (Barry) Albert; great grandchildren Mallory, Morgan, Sophia, Emma, Anna, Haley, Hannah, Luke, Addison, Louis, Cooper, Jordyn, Colton, and Haydn; brother Wilbert Kohlmeier; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

Audrey is preceded in death by her husband Louis P. Hoffmann; brothers Sylvester, Raymond and Fremond Kohlmeier; and sister Lorena Lich.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. until time of service July 17 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. July 17 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Wartburg, Rev. Dan Ostlund  officiating.

Interment will follow at Holy Cross Lutheran Cemetery in Wartburg.

The family requests no flowers.

Orvel J. “Big O” Mathews, 85, of Waterloo, died July 20, 2019, in Waterloo. He was born June 1, 1934, in Foster Pond, son of the late Simon and Agnes Mathews (nee Schneider).

He retired from Columbia Quarry Plant #9 in Dupo and was a member of Maeystown Sportsmans Club. 

He is survived by his children Sally (John) DeBourge and Melanie (David) Seders; grandchildren Brittany (Michael) Rednour, CJ Seders, Claire (Corey) Gaynor, Dylan Seders (Faith Bailey) and Lorna Seders; great grandchildren Addilynn Rednour and Charlotte Seders; brothers Dennis (Lynn) Mathews and David Mathews; sister Janet Posey; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

Orvel is preceded in death by wife Nancy Mathews (nee Prange); brothers John T., Dale F. and Clyde S. Mathews; brother-in-law Bill Posey.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. July 23 and 8 a.m. until time of service July 24 at Quernheim Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. July 24 at Quernheim Funeral Home in Waterloo, Pastor Matt Friz officiating.

Nancy “Tiger” Mathews (nee Prange), 68, of Waterloo, died July 20, 2019, in St. Louis. She was born July 8, 1951, in St. Louis, daughter of the late Elmer William and Imogene Flora (nee Braundmeier) Prange.

Sharon I. Rippelmeyer, 56, of Fults, died July 25, 2019, in Red Bud. She was born May 21, 1963, in Red Bud.

She was a truck driver for Schnucks.

She is survived by her mother Irma Rippelmeyer (nee Roseman); sister Karen J. Rippelmeyer; and her pets Bailey and Rascal.

Sharon is preceded in death by her father George W. Rippelmeyer.

Verna H. Frederick | Obituary

Verna H. Frederick (nee Spaeth), 91, of Belleville, born January 13, 1928, in New Baden, the daughter of Ervin and Alvina (nee Schomber) Spaeth,  died  July 26, 2019, at Mercy South, St. Louis.

Verna was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She stayed home to raise her family until her children were in high school. She later worked for Schroeder’s Catering for 23 years before her retirement. She was a member of St. Henry’s Catholic Church, Belleville, where she volunteered for many church functions, events, and fish-frys. She was a member of the St. Henry’s ladies’ club and a volunteer for the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Most recently, she enjoyed activities and spending time with her Cedarhurst friends and hanging out with her best feline friend, Sassy.

Surviving are her son Mark T. (Donna) Frederick of St. Louis; daughter Monica S. (Charles) Paul of Waterloo; five grandchildren, Megan (Henry) Wayne, Kellie (Alex) Demetris, Kevin Frederick (fiancé, Brittany), Jessica Paul and Olivia Paul; five great-grandchildren, Carter, Marcus, Trenton, Allison and Jordyn.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, George R. Frederick, whom she married on November 20, 1954, and who died on December 11, 2006; son Kevin G. “Muggs” Frederick; grandson Maxwell Frederick “Max” Paul; brother Richard Spaeth; sister Elvira “Sis” Kues; and three siblings in infancy, Clifford, Leo and Mary Ellen Spaeth.

Visitation will be held 4-8 p.m. July 30 at George Renner and Sons Funeral Home, Belleville and 9:30-10:30 a.m. July 31 at St. Henry’s Catholic Church, Belleville.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. July 31 at St. Henry’s Catholic Church, Fr. Von Deeke officiating.

Entombment will follow at Valhalla Mausoleum, Belleville.

Robert Basse | Obituary

Robert E. “Sonny” Basse, 84, of Waterloo, died July 31, 2019, at his residence. He was born Sept. 26, 1934 in St. Louis, son of the late Eugene and Fern (nee Isom) Basse.

Robert retired as a switchman from Union Pacific Railroad after 42 years.

He is preceded in death by his son, Wayde Basse; two sisters, Patricia Huffendick and Betty McCutcheon; three brothers, Jim, Frank and Paul Basse.

He is survived by two daughters, Yvonne Mays of Belleville and Patti Mosbacher of Waterloo; son Greg (Mary) Basse of St. Louis; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Aug. 2 and 10-11a.m. Aug. 3 at Moll Funeral Home, Mascoutah.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Aug. 3 at Moll Funeral Home, with Rev. Jason Vinson officiating. 

Burial will be held at a later date.

Gene E. Mehrtens | Obituary

Gene Emil Mehrtens, 90, of Springfield, Mo., passed into eternity on July 31, 2019 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon, Mo. He was born on March 16, 1929 to the late Emil and Emma (nee Kruse) Mehrtens.

Gene served in the United States Coast Guard, followed by 26 years of service as an Illinois State Trooper. He and his wife Elizabeth owned and operated a pest control business in Branson, Mo., before retiring at Table Rock Lake.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (nee Pennock) Mehrtens; brother Dale Mehrtens; sister Shirley (Don) Mehrmann; sons Robert (Bernice) Mehrtens and James (Jim) Mehrtens; daughters Connie (Lowell) Allen and Jane (Todd) Stone; step-daughters Rhonda (Mike) Tautphaeus and Teri (Dave) Enslow; step-son Bruce (Melissa) Gregory; grandchildren Bob, Thomas, Jason, Brandon, Jessica, Paul, Shellsea, Ashley, Lance, Alexis, Michael, Payton and Gabrielle; 16 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gene was preceded in death by sisters Delphine (Pape) and Esther (Schmidt); brothers-in-law Gilbert Pape and Roland Schmidt; and sister-in-law Wilma Mehrtens.

Visitation was Aug. 4 at Greenlawn Funeral Home East, Springfield, Ill. 

Services for Gene were Aug. 5 at the funeral home.

Interment with full military honors followed at Missouri Veterans Cemetery. 

Deborah Vincent Dehn | Obituary

Deborah Vincent Dehn, 67, of Waterloo, died Aug. 7, 2019. She was born June 2, 1952, in Buffalo, N.Y., daughter of the late Gasper and Lillian (nee Notery) Vincent. She was married to Charlie Dehn, who survives her. They were married September 26, 2002 in Vancouver, Canada.

Deborah was a member of American Mensa. She was self employed as a massage therapist, and as a trainer for the YMCA of Monroe County. 

Also surviving are her son Alex Glen of St. Louis; granddaughter Natalie Glen; brother Mark (Barbara) Vincent of Richmnod, Va.; and sister, June (Norman) White of Lake Martin, Ala., along with other relatives and friends.

Deborah’s wishes were to be cremated. Private family services will be held at a later date.

Linda Harvell | Obituary

Linda Sue Harvell (nee Beggs), 69, of East Carondelet, died Aug. 7, 2019 at Integrity Health Care of Columbia. She was born Oct. 17, 1949, in Peach Orchard, Mo.

Linda worked at Parks College, then as an administrative assistant at St. Louis University in the Dean’s office and later for Judith Trentman-Wilson Law Office in Belleville. She was an active member of Christ United Church of Christ in Dupo, where she was on the women’s guild, consistory, pastoral relations and she started the Mission Project.

Linda was a dear lady. Dale and Linda went above and beyond anything a family could ever ask for. They raised 8 children, loving them unconditionally. Dale and Linda were married on Dec. 24, 1966.

Surviving are her husband of nearly 53 years, Dale Harvell; her two daughters Rachel (Michael) Gomric and Kim (Mike) Reichling; her son Chad (Ellie) Harvell; her sisters and brothers Debbie Wilson, Lee (Judy) Wilson, Jerry (Tanja) Wilson, Lisa (Jim) Biggs and Lawrence Beggs; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Cathy McNair, Dennis (Teri) Harvell, Alice (Jerry) Devany and Karen Gower; her Goddaughter Gail (Jay) Harvell; her grandchildren Dustin (Crissa) Deatherage, Josh Wilson, Kirsten (Corey) Wilson, Grayson (Karyn) Wilson, Joseph Gomric, Christopher Gomric, Marcus Hahn, Mikenna Reichling, Olivia Reichling and Haylee Harvell; her great grandchildren, Blakely Wilson, Easton Deatherage, Lorelei Gomric and Lincoln Deatherage. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews along with other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father David R. Beggs, Sr.; her mother Velma I. Wilson (nee Duff); her brother David Beggs Jr.; her step-father Lee R. Wilson Sr.; her step-mother Goldie Beggs; and her brother-in-law Mike McNair. 

Visitation will be held on 2-6 p.m. Aug. 11, 2019 at Leesman Funeral Home in Dupo and Aug. 12 an hour before the service at the church. 

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 12 at Christ united Church of Christ in Dupo, with Rev. Todd Mushaney, officiating.

Interment will follow in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.

Marian J. Maag (nee Orrell), 89, of Waterloo, died Aug. 8, 2019, in Waterloo. She was born July 23, 1930, in Casey, daughter of the late George and Faye (nee Swim) Orrell.

She was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ and St. Paul UCC Choir, she was a retired teacher (Waterloo School District, third grade over 30 years), Illinois Retired Teachers Association and started her career at Shoemaker School (one-room schoolhouse).

She is survived by her children Linda (Coleman) Morse, Thomas (Lorrie) Maag, David (Cris) Maag and daughter-in-law Wendy Maag; grandchildren Bethany (Jonathan) Koch, Kristy (Branson) Whitman, Lindsey (Andy) Maag, Jacob Maag, Samuel Maag, Leah Maag and John Maag; great-grandchildren Nathan, Jeremiah and Lucy; sister Georgia “Sugar” (Ervin) Borcharding; sister-in-law Jane Hagedorn; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

Marian is preceded in death by her husband John Edward Maag; son James W. “Jay” Maag; and sisters Lois Rexinger and Roberta J. Hern.

He was a member of New Beginnings Church of God, Waterloo, and former member of Assembly of God Church, Renault.

Rose M. Roscow (nee Schilling), 80, of Waterloo,  died August 14, 2019, in St. Louis. She was born November 22, 1938, in Waterloo, daughter of the late Charles A. and Mary C. (nee Mathews) Schilling.

She was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Church, Mary and Martha Society and was a Girl Scout leader.

Judith A. Gundlach (nee Strobl), 74, of Columbia, died Aug. 14, 2019, at her residence surrounded by family. She was born Oct. 3, 1944, in Jacksonville, Fla.

Judy graduated from Barnes School of Nursing. She enjoyed playing bridge, traveling, watching Cardinal baseball games and spending time at the clubhouse with family. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Joseph Gundlach, whom she married on October 9, 1965;  daughters Laura Pratl (Tim Gorman) and Christy Gundlach; grandchildren, John Pratl and Katie Pratl; brother John Strobl; brothers-in-law Tom Gundlach and Dick (Kathy) Gundlach; sister-in-law Janet (Bill) Stumpf; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father John Strobl; her mother Alma (nee Mileur) Strobl Schindler; her stepfather Raymond Schindler; and  sisters-in-law Sandy Strobl and Bonnie Gundlach.

Visitation is 9-11 a.m. Aug. 20 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Columbia.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Aug. 20 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Msgr. Carl Scherrer officiating.

Nicholas James Eynon, 16, of Columbia, died Aug. 21, 2019. He was born May 24, 2003, in St. Louis. He is the son of Patrick J. Eynon and Jennifer L. (nee Madrid) Eynon.

Nicholas was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Columbia.

Also surviving are his sister, Alyssa Eynon of Columbia; maternal grandparents George Madrid and Marilyn Stamme, both of Collinsville; paternal grandmother Audrey Eynon of Ellisville, Mo.; aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Harold Eynon.

Visitation will be 9-11 a.m. Aug. 24 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Columbia. 

A Funeral Mass will follow visitation at 11 a.m., with Fr. Carl Scherrer officiating. 

Interment will follow in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Columbia.

Douglas R. Young | Obituary

Douglas R. “Doug” Wood, 72, of Morganfield, KY, formerly of Robinson, Ill., died Aug. 17, 2019 at 10:42 p.m. at Select Specialty Hospital, Evansville, Ind. following many months of failing health.

Born Nov. 17, 1946 in Salem, Ill., he was the son of Ross O. and Wanda J. (Gietler) Wood. Doug served his country in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1970. On December 30, 1966 he married Mary “Mick” (Culp) and she survives.

Doug worked for the Victor Dana Corporation in Robinson, Ill. and later transferred to Havana, Ill.  Following his work at Victor Dana he became the Human Resources Department Manger for Human Support Services, Waterloo.

Survivors include his wife Mary “Mick” Wood of Morganfield, Ky.; sons Damin Wood and Daron Wood, both of Millstadt; grandchildren Eden O’Hern of  Alton, Steven Bunge of Flagstaff, Ariz. and Kathleen Bunge of Tulsa Okla.; niece and nephew Treena and Mark Stephens, of Robinson, Ill.; great-niece and nephew Kaitlyn and Braden Stephens; a brother and sister-in-law Dusty and Sue Ann Wood of Indianapolis; sisters and brothers-in-law Mrs. Rhonda Gullett of Robinson and Mrs. Dee and Allan Johnson of Libertyville, Ill.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

There will be a gathering to celebrate Doug’s life on Aug. 23 from 4-7 p.m.  at Pulliam Funeral Home, Robinson, Ill.  

Interment of the cremated remains will be in the Olive Branch Cemetery, Annapolis, Ill. at a later date.

Marlene was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Waterloo.

Christopher John Graves, 60, of Waterloo, died Aug. 22, 2019 in Waterloo. He was born May 25, 1959 in Red Bud, the son of Richard and Patricia Graves (nee Fischer).

Christopher was a US Army veteran and a member of the United Autoworkers Union.

Christopher is survived by his children Renea (Don) Flynn, Joshua Graves and Jordan Graves; grandchildren Allison Flynn and Jack Graves.

Nicholas “Nick” J. Hopkins, 33, of Waterloo, died Aug. 23, 2019, in St. Louis. He was born March 24, 1986, in Red Bud.

He was a member of Life Community Church, Columbia, and an Illinois State Police S.W.A.T. operator. Trooper Nicholas Hopkins #6141 began his Illinois State Police career on June 1, 2009,  as a cadet at the Illinois State Police Academy. After graduating from the academy, he was assigned to District 12 (Effingham). On Aug. 1, 2013, Nick took an assignment with ISP Zone 7 investigations general criminal unit, and in Nov. 2013 he was assigned to District 11 patrol in Collinsville. In Feb. 2016, Nick transferred to Zone 6’s Metro East Police Assistance Team (MEPAT). In Sept. 2017 he was assigned to ISP S.W.A.T. and in March 16, 2018, he became a senior agent with the ISP.

He is survived by his wife Whitney Hopkins (nee Harris); children Emma and twins Evelyn and Owen; parents James Hopkins and Verna Hopkins (nee Janson); brothers and sisters Valerie (Justin) Dortch, Zack (Kathy) Hopkins, Emily (Mike) Auffenberg, Gabe (Katie) Hopkins and  Abby Hopkins; grandmother Evelyn Hopkins (nee Theis); sister-in-law Erin Harris; father-in-law and mother-in-law James and Laural (Dearnbarger) Harris; aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

Nick is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather Charles J. Hopkins; maternal grandparents John and Magdalen Janson; and uncle Robert “Bob” and aunt Mardell Pelch.

Visitation will be 3-9 p.m. Aug. 31 at Waterloo High School.

A funeral will be held 10 a.m. Sept. 1 at Waterloo High School in Waterloo, Pastor Jamey Bridges officiating.

Allen A. Kolmer, LTC, USAF, Ret., 86, of New Baden, died Aug. 26, 2019. He was born in Granite City on Feb. 24, 1933 the son of the late Otto and Henrietta Kolmer from Waterloo. 

Al will most be remembered as a great husband, dad and grandpa, and loved being involved with their activities. Al graduated from McKendree College and then proceeded to become an ordained minister from Eden Seminary in Webster Groves. He subsequently enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served the troops for twenty years as a Chaplain. While serving his country, Al became an intramural referee for softball and basketball, having fun with the troops while also coaching his sons in all their sports endeavors. Al was an avid amateur photographer, often winning the best photo contests at the bases he was assigned to. Al was a member of the New Baden Zion United Church of Christ. 

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Janice Kolmer (nee Logan), son Steve Kolmer, his wife Nancy, son Jim Kolmer, daughter-in-law Laurie Eihausen and her husband Jay and grandchildren Hannah and Chad Kolmer.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Dave Kolmer and his sister Ruth Kreuger (nee Kolmer).

Visitation will be 9-11 a.m. Aug. 30 at Nordike Funeral Home, New Baden. 

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Aug. 30 at the funeral home.

Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery in New Baden. 

Floyd Foster | Obituary

Floyd D. Foster, 94, of Baton Rouge, La., formerly of Waterloo, Iowa, where he spent most of his life, died Aug. 18, 2019, at home. He was born on Oct. 18, 1924, in Monroe County, Ill., son of the late Anna Mae and John Foster Sr. 

He served in World War II in the Navy from 1941 to 1945. He was a Boatswain’s Mate aboard the US Esso Bayonne, an oil tanker that serviced the battleships in the North Sea, Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea and Pacific. He also spent part of his service in the Philippines and on several other islands in the Pacific. He married Ethel R. Grittmann on Aug. 25, 1945, and they had one daughter, Linda Foster Benedict (Forest). He moved to Waterloo, Iowa, in 1949 to work at the John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works, where he remained until his retirement in 1985. He moved to Baton Rouge in 2014 to live with his daughter. 

He is survived by his wife; daughter; son-in-law;  grandsons Jason J. Benedict (Carolyn) of St. Louis and Dirk C. Benedict of Baton Rouge; great-grandchildren Cooper, Andrew, Ryan and Jane Benedict, of St. Louis; and brother L. Glenn Foster of Green Cove Springs, Fla. 

He is preceded in death by brothers, John Foster Jr. and Robert Foster and sister Joanne Foster Siscel. 

Memorial and gravesite services with full military rites will be at 10 a.m. Sept. 14 at Waterloo (Iowa) Memorial Park Cemetery, with arrangements by Locke Funeral Home.
